The Lindisfarne Gospels

The Lindisfarne Gospels were created more than 1300 years ago, before the Battle of Hastings, Viking invasions and the reign of Alfred the Great.

They were created by Eadfrith, a monk at the priory of Lindisfarne, and richly illustrated in the style of medieval manuscripts.

The hides of over a hundred cattle were used to make the book.

The Vikings arrive some 90 years afterwards, and Lindisfarne was the first place they attacked in England.

The narrow causeway that connects the island to mainland Northumbria is covered by the tides twice a day.

Tea, coffee and chat from 2.30pm, speaker at 3pm for monthly meeting
