The Hub @ Union
At Union Church we have set out to offer a venue to the town that helps make life better. As a result, we don’t just let anyone rent our rooms! We try to ensure that each group shares the same ethos as us, meaning they are inclusive and see themselves as a force for good! Therefore, we don’t just view the groups that use our premises as rentees – we see them as family and partners. If you have an idea for a group that will help build community or help those in need (or both) please do talk to us about it – we have a variety of ways we can help get your idea off the ground. Here is some information about the groups that currently run: -
Union Church Toddlers is open to all. Term time. We start at 10am onwards and run until 11:30am when we finish with some fun songs. We offer hot drinks, squash and biscuits. There is no charge but contributions are welcome.
Heathfield Fit Camp has been part of the Community Hub family for a couple of years now. Here is a link to their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/156932936328903/
Heathfield Morning WI meets every first Tuesday at 10am and each month is different. For more information please pop along or contact our church office where we will be happy to pass on your details.
Seniors Lunch Club - We say ‘seniors’ but we don’t turn anyone away who wants a delicious and hot 2-course lunch with tea/coffee for just £5. This group runs on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays and places can be booked with the church office. Age Concern Heathfield also provide a minibus to collect and return you if needed. These can be booked on 01435 866960
Tuesdays Together runs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 1:45pm and is a fun afternoon of tea and cake followed by puzzles, bingo, beetle drives, quizzes and speakers. The age group is mostly on the senior end of the spectrum but if you are lonely and up for a laugh, you are more than welcome. Financial contributions are not necessary but gratefully accepted! Call the church office for more details.
Rainbows and Brownies made a welcome return to the hub in 2023 and now meet regularly in term-time. Please contact the church office for details and we will pass your contact information to the correct leader.
Wednesday Bereavement Group this friendly and informal group meets monthly to talk about the issues around bereavement. The chat is overseen by a local counsellor and provides a safe space to share, listen and chat. White Feather Funerals sponsors this group.
The No-Pressure Drama Group - This friendly and small group started last year and wanted to provide a venue where it was safe to build confidence and make new friends. They produced their first play at Christmas 23. Everyone is very welcome. Again, the church office can put you in touch with the organisers or give you more info.
Lindyfit has been part of the Hub for years. It really is a very fun class – everyone should try it! We are an exercise class with a difference, we stroll/line dance. We will teach you the stroll routine and dance to the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, Country and Modern Music. All classes are friendly and welcome all ages from 18 and up, each stroll can be danced at your own pace. Good exercise and lots of fun. Thursdays at 6.30pm.
Renew: Well-being Coffee Morning: Vicky, our minister, started this group because she was a Chaplain in the NHS Mental Health Services before she came to us. It’s a safe place for everyone and has proved popular with those who are sometimes struggling with their own mental health but also for those who just want a chat. Each session finishes with an opportunity to join in with some prayer and meditation and there are extra helpers each week who are trained in listening skills. So, if you want to chat, want some company or just a cuppa and a bit of cake – do pop along!
Mankind Heathfield: ManKind is a free Support Group for men. Set up in 2020 in Eastbourne, ManKind provides a safe place for men to share how they are feeling and to support each other. The ManKind Heathfield group meets every Thursday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Union Church Community Hub (High Street entrance). If you are struggling with your mental health currently, are in recovery and willing to share your experience with other men or, you support someone with a mental health condition, this group is for you. The group encourages men to talk about their feelings however, if you are not ready to share, you can just listen. The group is not able to offer counselling or therapy. If you are experiencing an acute mental health condition, speak to your GP. For further information or to contact us, see the ManKind Heathfield Facebook page or ManKind website (www.mankindcic.co.uk)
Kinship Carers Support: Kinship Carers are a new addition to the Hub Family. Kinship care is when a child lives full-time or most of the time with a relative or close family friend, usually because their parents are not able to care for them. In the UK, there are more than 180,000 children in kinship care. Grandparents are the most common kinship carers, but older siblings, aunts, uncles, and people who know the child well can also take on the role. They provide friendship, support and advice to all kinship carers in the area, with or without a legal order. This is a safe, non-judgmental group who provide support to local kinship carers and their kinship children. https://compass.kinship.org.uk/

Waldron Cricket Club
The Club has a history of managing to play its cricket matches uninterrupted by weather, largely due to the outstanding drainage of the ground on sandstone and on a windswept slope. Combining that with the discovery of the origins of the cricket club being identified first of all by the centenary match being snowed off, the club motto is “Nives Ludum Impedire Solum Possunt” (“Only snow can stop play!” in Latin)
Waldron Cricket Club is the third oldest cricket club in known history – at least according to the “Cricketer Magazine”. Origins of the game of cricket are believed to have stemmed from a game played by shepherds on the Sussex Downs. The ball was a stone or piece of flint wrapped in wool and dyed with the shepherd’s usual marker of red. The wicket was a part of a wicket turnstile or fence and the bat was a shepherd's staff.
The game evolved into a betting vehicle for aristocrats/landowners who challenged similarly titled gentlemen or manor owners into games, with substantial gambles over the outcome. The landowners did the betting and the batting, and the farmworkers did the bowling and the majority of the “fetching” (i.e fielding).
Waldron plays at a historic picturesque ground with a local pub in walking distance.
The club participates in the National Village Knockout & Oakshott Cup and plays cricket Saturday and Sunday. There is a pub side, the RATS, who play 20/20 cricket during the week. Outdoor nets typically take place on a Thursday evening on an artificial net with a bowling machine.
